If you’re a parent in Scottsdale or Paradise Valley, you might wonder: "Is it too early to see an orthodontist?" The truth is, many orthodontic issues are easiest to guide while kids are still growing. Here are 7 common signs your child (ages 6–12) may benefit from an orthodontic evaluation.

1) Crowded or overlapping teeth

If teeth are twisting, overlapping, or "stacking," it can be a sign there isn’t enough room in the jaw. Early guidance can sometimes help create space and reduce the chance of more complex treatment later.

2) Early or late loss of baby teeth

Losing baby teeth much earlier (or later) than expected can affect how adult teeth come in. An evaluation can check whether spacing and eruption timing are on track.

3) Difficulty biting or chewing

If your child avoids certain foods, bites their cheek often, or seems uncomfortable chewing, their bite may not be lining up correctly.

4) Mouth breathing or chronic open-mouth posture

Consistent mouth breathing can be linked with facial growth and bite development. If you notice open-mouth posture, snoring, or dry lips, it’s worth discussing during an orthodontic visit (and with your pediatrician/ENT if needed).

5) Jaws that shift, pop, or look uneven

A jaw that shifts to one side when closing, or clicking/popping sounds, can signal a bite imbalance. Catching this early can help guide growth more smoothly.

6) Front teeth that stick out (or a "reverse" bite)

Protruding front teeth can be more prone to chipping with sports or falls. A reverse bite (lower teeth in front of upper teeth) can also affect function and growth—both are good reasons to get checked.

7) Thumb sucking/pacifier habits that persist

If thumb sucking or pacifier use continues as adult teeth start coming in, it can influence tooth position and bite. An orthodontic evaluation can help you understand what changes are happening and what to do next.

When should kids see an orthodontist?

Many kids benefit from a first orthodontic check around the early grade-school years—especially if any of the signs above are present. Even if treatment isn’t needed right away, you’ll get a clear plan for when (or if) to act.

What happens at an orthodontic evaluation?

Typically, it includes a quick exam, photos and/or imaging if needed, and a simple explanation of what’s developing normally, what to watch for, whether early treatment could help, and timing options and next steps.
